A vehicle load handling throughput is increased by combining the motion of a vehicle load handling maneuver axis with the sorting of a load on the carrier vehicle. An autonomous transport vehicle includes a transfer head (270) and a pusher (110PR) for separating a case unit (CU) mounted on the transfer head (270) when the head (270) is in a lowered position on a loading bed of the vehicle.
