A compact spiral-wound filter element with cassette-like performance is provided. A permeate flux of at least about 70% of the mass transfer limiting permeate flux of a reference cassette filter operated at the same cross-flow flux and a feed channel of said reference cassette filter operated at the same cross-flow flux. It is a spiral-wound filter element having a feed passage pressure loss of about 1.2 times or less of the pressure loss.
